Well Drilling in Nixa, Missouri

Most of the well drilling we do around Nixa, MO is in the countryside outside town. The City of Nixa pumps its own groundwater from city wells and stores it in water towers, so homes inside the city limits are on city water. Rural Christian County homes beyond those mains rely on private wells.

How deep are wells around Nixa?

Based on DNR well records through 2016, household wells within 5 miles of Nixa have a median depth of about 530 feet, and the middle half run from about 465 to 610 feet. That puts a typical Nixa-area well just past the 200 to 500 foot band behind WellDrillingCosts.com's published estimate of $10,000 to $34,000 for a complete well, so we price footage past 500 feet on its own line. Casing is set into solid rock before the open hole is drilled to water.

Karst and Deeper Wells on Nixa's West Side

The City of Nixa's 2003 comprehensive plan describes a karst field running through the Nixa area, most visibly to the northwest, with more than 265 sinkholes and 23 caves. In Saunders Valley, northwest of town, a stream sinks and rises at least five times before resurfacing at Blue Spring.

The plan also reports high coliform counts in the shallow aquifer from animal and human waste, and it warns that wells cased poorly through that layer can let contamination reach the deep aquifer. When DNR sampled wells in the Nixa area in the summer of 1989, more than half of those tested were listed as unsafe, the plan notes.

The same DNR records show the west side drilling deeper. About three in four wells west of Nixa went past 500 feet, against fewer than half on the east side, and northwest of town the median was about 565 feet.

Nixa also sits in DNR Drilling Area 9, which covers Greene County and the Christian County panhandle. There, casing on a bedrock well must reach at least 10 feet below the Ozark Confining Unit, the low-permeability rock between the shallow and deep aquifers. DNR's Area 9 map lists a minimum casing depth for each quarter section, and within 5 miles of town four in five of those minimums are 250 feet or more. Only about 1 in 12 wells in the older records carried as much casing as the current minimum for its quarter section.

So a neighbor's well is a poor guide to what a new one costs. Call us and we'll check the DNR minimum for your quarter section before quoting, with casing and open hole on separate lines.

Testing a Nixa Well at the Christian County Lab

The Christian County Health Department's certified lab tests well water for the presence or absence of bacteria for $15.

Given the 1989 results, a yearly bacteria test, plus one after heavy rain or well work, is a sensible routine. If a result comes back positive, call us and we'll talk through disinfecting the well and finding the way in.

Why Nixa-Area Homes Rely on Private Wells

Nixa has grown its water system by buying the RDE and Tuscany Hills systems, and EPA records list three city-owned groundwater systems serving about 24,500, 2,900 and 175 people. Outside those lines, homes depend on their own wells or on small shared systems, such as the one EPA lists for James River Estates Subdivision.

Nixa sits on the upland Springfield Plateau, where the city's 2003 comprehensive plan describes gently rolling land that steepens toward the James River on the north and Finley Creek to the southeast. In the same DNR records, wells within 5 miles of town have a median casing of about 105 feet and a median static water level about 150 feet below ground.
